What Is RPL for the Certificate IV in Kitchen Management?

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is an Australian Government-endorsed assessment pathway that allows experienced chefs and kitchen managers to have their existing skills, knowledge and workplace experience formally assessed against the units of a nationally recognised qualification — without completing full classroom-based study.

If you have been working as a chef, sous chef, head chef or kitchen manager in a restaurant, hotel, club, pub, café or catering operation, you may already have the competencies required for the SIT40521 Certificate IV in Kitchen Management. RPL allows you to demonstrate those competencies through evidence rather than coursework.

The SIT40521 is the current nationally recognised Certificate IV-level qualification for kitchen management professionals across Australia. It covers culinary production, kitchen operations management, team leadership, menu planning, food safety supervision and business operations — and is accepted by employers in every state and territory.

Note: SIT40521 is Release 1, created 27 February 2026 under the SIT Tourism, Travel and Hospitality Training Package. It is the current qualification for RPL assessment purposes.
