Getting Started with RPL

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a formal, evidence-based assessment process governed by the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF). It evaluates whether your existing skills, knowledge and work experience align with the requirements of a nationally recognised qualification — without requiring you to repeat training you have already effectively completed through work.

RPL acknowledges that learning happens in the workplace, not only in classrooms. If you can demonstrate competency through documented evidence, you may be eligible to pursue a formal qualification outcome through a partner Registered Training Organisation (RTO).

RPL is designed for experienced people — not those just starting out. It is typically suitable for:

  • Skilled workers and tradespeople with substantial hands-on experience
  • Skilled migrants and international professionals with overseas work history
  • Business professionals, managers and administrators without formal qualifications
  • Healthcare, aged care and community services workers
  • Career changers with transferable skills from adjacent industries
  • Employers seeking to formally credential experienced staff

As a general guide, applicants with at least 2–3 years of relevant industry experience are more likely to have sufficient evidence to support an RPL application.

A full training course requires you to complete all units of study from scratch, regardless of what you already know. RPL assesses the skills and knowledge you already have and maps them against the qualification requirements.

The key differences:

  • Time: RPL typically takes 4–8 weeks. A full course can take 6–24 months.
  • Cost: RPL is generally significantly less expensive than full course fees.
  • Study: RPL requires evidence gathering, not classroom attendance or assignments.
  • Outcome: Both pathways result in the same nationally recognised AQF qualification.

RPL is not a shortcut — it is a legitimate, regulated assessment pathway for people who have already demonstrated the required competencies through real work experience.

The first step is always your free eligibility check. Complete the short online form at rightpathway.com.au/eligibility-check and our team will review your background and contact you to discuss which qualification pathways may suit your experience.

There is no obligation to proceed after the free check. If you are eligible and choose to move forward, we will guide you through the evidence preparation process before your application is submitted to a partner RTO for formal assessment.

Yes — completely free, with no obligation. The initial eligibility assessment is designed to help you understand whether your experience and background may align with an RPL qualification pathway before you commit to any further steps. Right Pathway does not charge for the initial assessment under any circumstances.

Eligibility & Experience

There is no universal minimum, as requirements vary by qualification and the specific units of competency involved. However, as a general guide:

  • Certificate III qualifications: Typically 2–3 years of relevant hands-on experience
  • Certificate IV qualifications: Typically 3–5 years, often including supervisory or senior roles
  • Diploma qualifications: Typically 4–6 years, often including management or specialist responsibilities
  • Advanced Diploma qualifications: Typically 6+ years at a senior or strategic level

Your free eligibility check will give you a clearer picture of whether your specific experience aligns with the qualification you are pursuing.

Yes. RPL assessments consider the totality of your work experience, not just your most recent role. Experience from multiple employers, different job titles, contract work, self-employment and even volunteer work can all be considered — provided it is relevant to the qualification units and can be evidenced appropriately.

Yes. Previous formal training, certificates, short courses, workplace training programs and even partially completed qualifications can all be considered as part of your RPL evidence. This is sometimes referred to as Credit Transfer (CT) when it involves formally recognised prior qualifications.

Bring any certificates, transcripts or training records you have — they may reduce the amount of additional evidence required.

Yes — in fact, current employment often strengthens an RPL application. Being actively employed in a relevant role makes it easier to gather recent evidence, obtain supervisor references and demonstrate current competency. Right Pathway's process is designed to work around your work schedule, including FIFO rosters and shift work.

If your experience covers most but not all of the units in a qualification, a partial RPL outcome may be possible. In this case, the RTO may grant RPL for the units you can evidence and require gap training for the remaining units.

Your free eligibility check will help identify any potential gaps before you commit to the process.

Evidence & Documents

Evidence requirements vary by qualification, but commonly accepted evidence types include:

  • Employment records — payslips, contracts, letters of employment
  • Supervisor or employer references (written statements confirming your role and duties)
  • Position descriptions or duty statements
  • Photos or videos of work performed
  • Work samples, portfolios or project documentation
  • Licences, tickets, certificates or industry cards
  • Logbooks, timesheets or site records
  • Previous training certificates or transcripts
  • Third-party observation reports

Right Pathway will guide you through exactly which evidence is required for your specific qualification before you begin gathering documents.

This is a common concern, particularly for applicants whose previous employers are no longer operating or who have changed industries. In these cases, alternative evidence can often be used:

  • References from colleagues, clients or industry contacts who can verify your work
  • Statutory declarations (signed statements under oath)
  • Work samples, photos or project records that demonstrate your skills independently
  • Tax records, invoices or business documents for self-employed applicants

Right Pathway will help you identify the strongest available evidence for your situation.

There is no universal rule on recency, but RTO assessors generally prefer evidence from the past 3–5 years where possible. Older evidence can still be considered, particularly when supported by more recent evidence that demonstrates ongoing competency.

If your most recent relevant experience is older, Right Pathway will advise on how to present your evidence most effectively.

It depends on the qualification and the RTO. Some assessments are entirely portfolio-based (documents only). Others may include:

  • A structured interview or verbal questioning by the assessor
  • A written knowledge assessment (short answers, not exams)
  • A practical demonstration or workplace observation (for some trade qualifications)

Right Pathway will inform you of any assessment requirements specific to your qualification before you proceed.

Yes. Right Pathway's process is entirely online. All evidence is submitted electronically — scanned documents, digital photos, PDFs and electronic references are all accepted. You do not need to attend any office or training centre in person at any stage of the process.

Cost & Timelines

RPL costs in Australia are not a flat rate. Fees vary based on the qualification level, the number of units of competency, the industry, and the RTO conducting the assessment. As a general guide:

  • Certificate III qualifications: Generally lower cost, fewer units
  • Certificate IV qualifications: Mid-range, more complex assessment
  • Diploma qualifications: Higher cost, broader evidence requirements
  • Advanced Diploma / Graduate Diploma: Premium tier, senior-level assessment

RPL is generally significantly less expensive than full course fees for the same qualification. For a detailed breakdown, see our RPL cost guide.

Your initial eligibility check is always completely free with no obligation.

The typical turnaround from evidence submission to qualification outcome is 4–8 weeks. This is the RTO's formal assessment period once a complete evidence portfolio has been submitted.

The total time from starting with Right Pathway to receiving your qualification depends on:

  • How quickly you can gather and submit your evidence
  • The complexity of the qualification and number of units
  • The RTO's current assessment workload
  • Whether additional evidence is requested during assessment

Some applicants complete the full process in 6 weeks. Complex portfolios or qualifications with practical assessment components may take up to 12 weeks.

Right Pathway believes in complete transparency. The initial eligibility check is free. If you choose to proceed, service fees are clearly communicated before you commit. There are no surprise charges.

Right Pathway also offers a 100% refund guarantee if your RPL application is unsuccessful, subject to terms and conditions. See our important notes for full details.

Payment options including instalments may be available depending on your qualification and circumstances. Contact Right Pathway directly after your free eligibility check to discuss payment arrangements that suit your situation.

Yes — significantly. A full Certificate III or Diploma course can take 6–24 months of study. RPL typically takes 4–8 weeks from evidence submission to qualification outcome.

The time saving is one of the primary reasons experienced professionals choose RPL over re-enrolling in a course they have effectively already completed through work.

Qualifications & Outcomes

Yes. All qualifications issued through RPL are issued by a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) under the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF). They carry exactly the same status as qualifications obtained through traditional study and are nationally recognised across all Australian states and territories.

Employers, licensing bodies and further education institutions across Australia recognise AQF qualifications regardless of whether they were obtained through RPL or full course study.

RPL is available for a wide range of AQF qualifications from Certificate II through to Advanced Diploma and Graduate Diploma level. Right Pathway currently supports 33+ specific qualification pathways across 18 industries including:

  • Community Services, Aged Care and Early Childhood Education
  • Business, Leadership, Management and Marketing
  • Building, Construction and Trade qualifications
  • Hospitality, Commercial Cookery and Baking
  • Information and Communications Technology (ICT)
  • Fitness, Beauty Therapy and Health
  • Training and Assessment (TAE40122)
  • Engineering Fabrication and Cabinet Making

No. RPL outcomes depend on the evidence you provide and the formal assessment conducted by the partner RTO. No RPL provider can legally guarantee a qualification outcome — the assessment decision rests solely with the RTO assessor.

Right Pathway offers a 100% refund guarantee if your application is unsuccessful, subject to terms and conditions. See our important notes for full details.

Yes. AQF qualifications obtained through RPL can be used to support university entry and may qualify for advanced standing (credit) toward bachelor degrees or higher qualifications, depending on the university and the specific qualification.

For example, a Diploma (AQF Level 5) may qualify for up to one year of credit toward a relevant bachelor degree. See our RPL and University Credit guide for more detail.

The qualification is issued solely by the relevant Registered Training Organisation (RTO) that conducts the formal assessment. Right Pathway is not an RTO and does not issue qualifications. Right Pathway supports applicants through the evidence preparation and pathway facilitation process only. All formal assessments and qualifications are conducted and issued exclusively by partner RTOs under the ASQA framework.

Overseas & Migration

Yes. Overseas work experience can be considered as part of an RPL assessment, provided it can be evidenced and is relevant to the units of competency within the Australian qualification. Right Pathway regularly supports applicants with international work histories from countries including:

  • India, Nepal, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Bangladesh
  • The United Kingdom, South Africa, New Zealand and Ireland
  • China, Malaysia, Vietnam and other Asia-Pacific countries

The key requirement is that your experience can be evidenced — employment records, references, work samples and other documentation from overseas employers are all accepted.

No. RPL is available to applicants regardless of their visa or residency status, provided they are currently in Australia or have relevant Australian or overseas work experience. Right Pathway supports applicants on a range of visa types including skilled migration visas, temporary work visas and permanent residency.

Note that some government-subsidised training programs have residency requirements, but RPL through Right Pathway's partner RTOs is not subject to these restrictions. Contact us to confirm your eligibility based on your specific visa situation.

An RPL qualification may support certain skilled migration pathways by providing a formal Australian qualification that aligns with your nominated occupation. However, RPL qualifications are not automatically accepted by all skills assessment bodies for visa purposes.

Right Pathway does not provide migration advice and does not guarantee visa or migration outcomes. We strongly recommend consulting a registered migration agent for advice specific to your visa pathway.

For more information on how RPL qualifications can align with skilled visa requirements, see our RPL for skilled migration guide.

Documents in languages other than English may need to be translated by a NAATI-accredited translator before submission. Right Pathway will advise you on which documents require translation and how to obtain certified translations.

Translation costs are the applicant's responsibility but are generally modest for standard employment documents.

Right Pathway primarily supports applicants who are currently in Australia or who have recent Australian work experience. If you are planning to relocate to Australia, we recommend completing your free eligibility check once you have arrived and begun work in your field. Contact us to discuss your specific situation.
