RPL as a University Pathway in Australia
Your years of professional experience have real academic value. Recognition of Prior Learning can convert verified work history into a nationally recognised VET qualification — which may then serve as a foundation for university study. Right Pathway supports eligible applicants through every stage of that journey.
Short answer: Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) in Australia allows eligible professionals to convert verified work experience into a nationally recognised VET qualification — from Diploma through to Advanced Diploma level. Under the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF), those qualifications may then be presented to universities as the basis for advanced standing or credit towards a bachelor's or master's degree. Right Pathway supports the RPL evidence preparation stage through partner Registered Training Organisations. University admission and credit decisions are made solely by the university.
Important: Right Pathway supports the RPL evidence preparation process only. We are not a Registered Training Organisation and do not issue qualifications. University admission, credit decisions, and degree completion are managed entirely by the university — not by Right Pathway or our partner RTOs.

What Is the RPL University Pathway?
The RPL university pathway is a two-stage process that begins with Recognition of Prior Learning and ends with formal university study. In Stage 1, eligible professionals use their verified work experience as evidence to pursue a nationally recognised VET qualification through a partner Registered Training Organisation. In Stage 2 — which is entirely independent of Right Pathway — the individual applies to a university of their choice and requests advanced standing or credit based on their newly issued qualification.
This pathway is grounded in the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF), which provides a nationally consistent structure for recognising qualifications across VET and higher education sectors. Under the AQF, a Diploma (Level 5) or Advanced Diploma (Level 6) may be presented to a university as the basis for credit towards a relevant bachelor's degree. Similarly, a Graduate Diploma (Level 8) may support advanced standing towards a master's degree or MBA programme.
The key principle is recognition, not repetition. If you have already demonstrated competency through years of professional practice, the RPL pathway allows that expertise to be formally acknowledged — first as a VET qualification, and then potentially as university credit.
What Right Pathway Does in This Process
Right Pathway is an RPL support and facilitation service. We are not a Registered Training Organisation and we do not conduct formal assessments or issue qualifications. Our role is to help eligible applicants identify the right qualification for their career goals, gather and organise their evidence portfolio, and prepare a strong submission for formal assessment by one of our partner RTOs.
Once your VET qualification has been issued by the partner RTO, the next step — applying to a university and requesting credit — is entirely between you and the institution of your choice. Right Pathway does not manage university applications, and we cannot guarantee admission, credit amounts, or degree outcomes.
The Two-Stage University Pathway
Right Pathway walks alongside you through Stage 1. Stage 2 is between you and the university.
Indicative University Credit Under the AQF
The Australian Qualifications Framework provides a general guide for credit recognition. These are indicative maximums — not guaranteed outcomes.
| Your VET Qualification | AQF Level | Indicative Credit | Towards |
|---|---|---|---|
| Diploma | Level 5 | Up to ~33% (approx. 1 year) | Relevant bachelor's degree |
| Advanced Diploma | Level 6 | Up to ~50% (approx. 1.5 years) | Relevant bachelor's degree |
| Graduate Certificate | Level 8 | Up to ~33% | Relevant master's degree |
| Graduate Diploma | Level 8 | Up to ~50% | Relevant master's degree or MBA |
What these figures mean — and what they don't
These are indicative maximums based on the AQF framework, not guaranteed outcomes. Actual credit depends on:
- The specific university and programme — each institution has its own credit recognition policy
- The relevance of your VET qualification to the degree you are applying for
- The university's assessment of your qualification's content and learning outcomes
- Programme-specific requirements that may limit or restrict advanced standing
We strongly recommend contacting your preferred university directly before commencing the RPL process to confirm their credit recognition policy.
The MBA Pathway: From Work Experience to Postgraduate Study
You have the leadership experience. The MBA has always been the next step. Recognition of Prior Learning can change the equation.
Achieve a Graduate Diploma Through RPL
If you have significant management or leadership experience, you may be eligible for a Graduate Diploma of Business or Strategic Leadership. Your professional history becomes the evidence portfolio.
Apply to a University MBA Programme
With your Graduate Diploma in hand, apply for admission and request advanced standing based on units you have already demonstrated competency in.
Complete Only the Remaining Units
If the university grants credit, you complete only the remaining portion of the degree — building on what you have demonstrated, not repeating it.
This pathway may suit you if:
- ✅ You have several years of management or leadership experience
- ✅ You are considering an MBA but want to reduce time and cost
- ✅ You understand that RPL is the foundation — not the finish line

Frequently Asked Questions About RPL and University Pathways
Yes. Nationally recognised VET qualifications obtained through RPL are issued under the Australian Qualifications Framework and hold the same status as qualifications obtained through traditional study. Many Australian universities accept AQF-aligned VET qualifications as the basis for admission and may grant advanced standing or credit. However, each university sets its own admission and credit recognition policy independently.
Under the AQF, a Diploma may provide up to approximately 33% credit towards a relevant bachelor's degree, and an Advanced Diploma may provide up to approximately 50%. A Graduate Diploma may provide up to 50% credit towards a relevant master's degree or MBA. These are indicative maximums — not guaranteed outcomes. The actual credit depends entirely on the university, the programme, and their own credit recognition policy.
No. Right Pathway supports the RPL evidence preparation stage only. Once your VET qualification has been issued by the partner RTO, the university application, credit request, and degree completion are entirely between you and the institution of your choice. Right Pathway does not manage university applications and cannot influence admission or credit decisions.
Yes. Overseas work experience, international qualifications and practical skills can often be mapped to Australian competency standards as part of the RPL assessment process. Right Pathway regularly assists applicants with experience from India, Nepal, the Philippines, South Africa, the United Kingdom, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Bangladesh. Once a nationally recognised Australian VET qualification is issued, it can be presented to universities as part of an application for advanced standing.
Right Pathway supports RPL pathways for a wide range of qualifications relevant to university study, including Diplomas and Advanced Diplomas in Business, Leadership and Management, Community Services, Information Technology, and Project Management, as well as Graduate Diplomas in Business and Strategic Leadership.
