What Happens During the RPL Process?

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a formal assessment process that evaluates whether your existing work experience, prior training, and demonstrated competency align with the requirements of a nationally recognised qualification in Australia.

Rather than unnecessarily repeating training you have already effectively completed through work, eligible applicants may be able to use documented evidence of existing skills to pursue qualification outcomes through partner Registered Training Organisations (RTOs).

All qualifications pursued through RPL are issued under the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) by the relevant Registered Training Organisation, and are nationally recognised across all Australian states and territories.

Where competency requirements are met, the nationally recognised qualification is issued by the relevant RTO and delivered electronically. Congratulations!

Our Role in the RPL Pathway

Right Pathway supports eligible applicants by helping them understand the pathway, identify relevant evidence, and prepare documents for assessment. Final qualifications are issued solely by the relevant Registered Training Organisation.

Outcomes depend on eligibility, evidence quality, and qualification-specific assessment requirements. Right Pathway is not a Registered Training Organisation and does not issue qualifications. We are an RPL support and facilitation service. All formal assessments are conducted exclusively by our partner RTOs, which operate under the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) framework.

Frequently Asked Questions About the RPL Process

Helpful answers about evidence, assessment steps, timeframes and Recognition of Prior Learning outcomes in Australia.

RPL is a formal assessment process that recognises skills and knowledge gained through work experience, prior training, and practical learning. It may allow eligible applicants to pursue a nationally recognised qualification without unnecessarily repeating equivalent training they have already effectively completed through real-world practice.

Timeframes vary depending on the qualification, evidence readiness, and assessment requirements. Most RPL pathways are completed in 4 to 8 weeks from evidence submission. Complex portfolios or qualifications with higher evidence demands may take up to 12 weeks.

If your evidence fully meets the competency requirements of the qualification, additional study may not be needed. Where gaps are identified during assessment, further evidence or targeted gap training may be required depending on the specific qualification and the partner RTO's requirements.

There is no single price for RPL in Australia — each qualification carries its own assessment investment based on the complexity of the units of competency, the industry requirements, and the evidence involved. A Certificate III trade qualification will have a different fee structure to a Diploma of Business or a Certificate IV in Community Services.

Your initial eligibility assessment with Right Pathway is always completely free and carries no obligation to proceed. Once we review your skills and experience, we provide a clear, personalised quote for your specific qualification pathway — so you know exactly what to expect before committing. Qualifications issued through Recognition of Prior Learning are nationally recognised when issued by the relevant Registered Training Organisation under the Australian Qualifications Framework. They carry the same qualification outcome as the standard training pathway and are recognised by employers and institutions across Australia.

In many cases, overseas work experience and prior study may be considered where they are relevant to the qualification and supported by appropriate evidence. Right Pathway regularly supports skilled migrants and international professionals through this process across a wide range of industries.

Evidence typically includes employment records, payslips, employer references, work portfolios, photos of completed work, certificates from prior training, and a resume. For trade qualifications, practical evidence such as photos and portfolios is usually required. The exact requirements depend on the qualification and the partner RTO. Right Pathway guides you through what is needed for your specific pathway.

Right Pathway supports RPL pathways across 18 industries including Community Services, Business and Administration, Trade, Hospitality and Tourism, Building and Construction, ICT, Health, Automotive, Fitness, Security, Training and Assessment, Horticulture, Property Services, Cleaning, Art and Design, Pest Control, Retail, and Sports Coaching. Qualifications range from Certificate II to Advanced Diploma level under the Australian Qualifications Framework.
