RPL Process

Learn how Recognition of Prior Learning works step by step. This page explains the typical RPL process, from your first enquiry and evidence collection through to assessment, feedback, and qualification delivery.

Start Your RPL Assessment

How the Recognition of Prior Learning Process Works

The RPL process is designed to assess the skills and knowledge you have already gained through work, prior study, training, and practical experience. Instead of repeating learning you may already have, you submit evidence that is reviewed against the requirements of the relevant qualification.

While exact requirements can vary by qualification, the steps below outline the typical process applicants follow.

What Is the RPL Process?

The Recognition of Prior Learning process is a structured pathway that assesses whether your existing work experience, prior learning, and supporting evidence align with the requirements of a nationally recognised qualification in Australia.

Who This Process Is For

This process may suit experienced workers, skilled migrants, trade professionals, applicants with overseas experience, and people who want to convert practical skills into a nationally recognised Australian qualification.

Step 1 RPL enquiry process

1. RPL Enquiry

The process usually begins with an initial discussion about your goals and background. This helps determine the qualification you are aiming for and whether your experience appears suitable for the pathway.

  • Your preferred qualification
  • Whether you are currently in Australia
  • Your visa type, if applicable

Step 2 RPL process explained by email

2. RPL Process via Email

After the initial enquiry, you receive an email explaining the process in more detail. This typically includes a checklist of the documents and supporting evidence needed for your initial review.

Step 3 collect supporting evidence for RPL

3. Collect Supporting Evidence

You then submit your documents and supporting materials. Depending on the qualification, this may include work references, employment records, identification, work samples, photos, videos, or a portfolio of evidence.

For trade pathways, visual evidence and practical examples are often especially important.

Step 4 initial assessment and payment

4. Initial Assessment and Payment

An initial review is completed to check that the required documents have been provided and that your application is ready for the next stage. Payment must be finalised before documents are submitted to the partner RTO for formal assessment.

Step 5 RTO assessment and feedback

5. RTO Assessment and Feedback

The partner RTO assessor reviews your evidence, verifies employer references, and determines whether further information is required. This stage often takes around 4 to 8 weeks depending on the qualification and evidence provided, although some applications may have fast-track options.

Depending on the qualification and evidence provided, you may also be asked to complete an RPL Kit or join a phone or online interview.

Step 6 receive your qualification

6. Receive Your Qualification

Once the process is completed and the outcome is finalised, your qualification is prepared and sent to you in PDF format. Any outstanding payments must be settled before delivery.

Final qualifications are issued by the relevant Registered Training Organisation. Right Pathway supports applicants through the preparation and pathway stages.
