RPL for Certificate IV in Fitness

Already working as a personal trainer, group fitness instructor or fitness coach? Turn your hands-on industry experience into the nationally recognised SIS40221 Certificate IV in Fitness — without going back to study full time.

What Is RPL for the Certificate IV in Fitness?

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is an Australian Government-endorsed assessment pathway that allows experienced fitness professionals to have their existing skills, knowledge and workplace experience formally assessed against the units of a nationally recognised qualification — without completing full classroom-based study.

If you have been working as a personal trainer, group fitness instructor, strength and conditioning coach, fitness studio owner or fitness industry professional, you may already have the competencies required for the SIS40221 Certificate IV in Fitness. RPL allows you to demonstrate those competencies through evidence rather than coursework.

The SIS40221 is the current nationally recognised Certificate IV-level qualification for personal trainers across Australia. It is the minimum qualification required for registration as a Personal Trainer with Fitness Australia (now Fitness and Lifestyle Group) and is accepted by gyms, fitness studios, sporting organisations and health clubs across all states and territories. It is a significant step up from the Certificate III in Fitness (SIS30321), enabling holders to design and deliver personalised training programs for individual clients.

Current release: SIS40221 is Release 2 under the SIS Sport, Fitness and Recreation Training Package (Release 6.1, March 2025). Right Pathway builds all RPL assessments against the current Release 2 standard. If you hold SIS40215 or an earlier version, Right Pathway can advise on the most efficient upgrade pathway.
