RPL Eligibility Check: How to Know If Your Experience Qualifies

A practical first step towards recognising the skills you already have

If you have built valuable skills through work, previous study, volunteering or life experience, Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) may help you turn that experience into credit towards a nationally recognised qualification. An eligibility check helps determine whether your background is likely to align with the requirements before you begin a formal assessment.

What an RPL eligibility check looks for

An eligibility check compares your experience with the units of competency in a relevant qualification. It considers the work you have performed, the level of responsibility you have held, how recently you used those skills and whether your experience covers enough of the qualification. It is an initial review only. Final competency decisions must be made by a qualified assessor through a Registered Training Organisation (RTO).

The experience that may support your application

Relevant experience can come from paid employment, self-employment, contract work, volunteering, workplace training or previous formal and informal learning. Strong applicants can explain not only how long they have worked in a field, but also the tasks they perform, the standards they follow and the decisions they make. Experience from Australia or overseas may be considered when it is relevant, current and able to be verified.

Evidence that helps show your skills

Useful evidence may include a detailed résumé, position descriptions, employer references, payslips, contracts, licences, training records and examples of completed work. Depending on the qualification, an assessor may also request photographs, videos, workplace documents, an interview, a practical demonstration or a third-party report. Evidence should be valid, authentic, current and sufficient for the competency being assessed.

Signs you may be ready for RPL

You may be a suitable candidate if you have substantial hands-on experience, regularly perform the core duties linked to the qualification and can provide credible evidence or workplace verification. You should also be comfortable explaining how you complete key tasks safely and to industry standards. Years of experience can strengthen an application, but time alone does not guarantee eligibility because every required unit must be assessed.

What happens when there are gaps

An eligibility check may show that your experience covers much of a qualification but not every requirement. This does not automatically mean you cannot continue. The RTO may identify further evidence, additional assessment or gap training needed before competency can be confirmed. A genuine RPL process should clearly explain what is missing, how it can be addressed and any related time or costs.

Take the next step with confidence

An RPL eligibility check gives you a clearer picture of how your experience may align with a qualification and what evidence you should prepare. It is not an instant qualification or a guarantee of approval. It is a practical starting point for a thorough, evidence-based assessment that protects the value of your skills and the integrity of the qualification.

Contact Right Pathway for a free initial RPL eligibility check. Our team can help review your work history, identify a suitable qualification pathway and explain the evidence you may need before your application is assessed through a partner RTO.
