If you are working FIFO, offshore, or in a remote location, you might assume that getting a formal qualification is out of reach. Long rosters, limited internet access, and time away from home make it easy to put your career development on hold.

The good news is that RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning) is one of the most practical qualification pathways for remote and FIFO workers. Here is what you need to know.

What Is RPL and Why Does It Suit Remote Workers?

RPL assesses the skills and experience you have already built through your work. Instead of attending classes or completing coursework, you submit evidence that demonstrates your existing competency.

For FIFO and offshore workers, this is a significant advantage. You are not required to be in a classroom or attend face-to-face sessions. The entire process can be completed remotely, around your roster, at a pace that suits your schedule.

Can You Really Do RPL While on Roster?

Yes. Most RPL providers work with you online and via email or phone. The process typically involves an initial skills assessment usually done over a phone or video call, a checklist of the evidence you need to gather, submitting your evidence portfolio digitally, and a follow-up interview or gap assessment if needed, also done remotely.

Because there are no fixed class times or attendance requirements, you can work through your RPL during your days off, between shifts, or from camp accommodation.

What Evidence Do FIFO and Offshore Workers Typically Use?

Your evidence comes from your work experience, and as a FIFO or offshore worker, you likely have more relevant material than you realise. Common evidence includes your resume or CV detailing your roles and employment history, references or statements from supervisors or site managers, certificates, tickets, and licences relevant to your industry, site documents, safety reports, toolbox talks, or job records, photos of completed work where applicable, and payslips or employment contracts confirming your role and time in the industry.

Which Qualifications Are Common for FIFO and Remote Workers?

RPL is available across a wide range of qualifications. Some of the most common ones include Certificate III or IV in Civil Construction, Certificate III or IV in Resources and Infrastructure, Certificate IV in Work Health and Safety, Certificate IV in Leadership and Management, Certificate III in Electrotechnology, and Diploma of Project Management.

How Does the Roster Affect the Timeline?

Most candidates who stay organised and responsive can complete their RPL within four to eight weeks, even with a demanding roster. A common approach for FIFO workers is to use the first week off to complete the initial consultation and gather documents, submit the evidence portfolio during the next break, and complete any follow-up requirements in the weeks that follow.

Why RPL Makes Sense for Experienced Field Workers

Many FIFO and offshore workers have spent years building real, hands-on skills that are directly aligned with formal qualification standards. RPL bridges that gap. It gives you a nationally recognised qualification based on what you already know and do every day, opening doors to higher-paying roles, supervisory positions, and career progression.
